This award-winning data centre built in 2009 is one of the largest air-cooled buildings in the world and sets a new standard for this technology. The project started in 2008 when EDS took a hard look at their existing designs in the face of rapidly-escalating fuel costs. With help from the Rocky Mountain Institute, EDS brought together experts from diverse fields to look at new ideas for power and cooling. Househam Henderson, with Engineers Norman Disney & Young were part of that team. The project involved converting a 30,000 square metres warehouse into a data centre with eventually around 10,000m2 of white space, all cooled by outside air. The team faced unique challenges from the tight programme, the high level of innovation and the scale of the building. Each hall is designed to be cooled by 100kW of fan power for a peak load of 2,440kW using 16 fans each over 2 metres diameter. The PUE is estimated at less than 1.20 and the building is rated BREEAM ‘Excellent’.
